Stop the Scare Tactics of IE AntiVirus

A new tactic in web advertising is using fear and fake error messages to goad computer users into buying bogus anti-spyware programs. One of the culprits in this aggressive advertising scheme is the rogue anti-spyware IE AntiVirus, or IE AntiVirus 3.2. Neither one is legitimate anti-spyware software and it will not protect your computer from other threats. Manual removal of IE AntiVirus is one of the most involved for rogue anti-spyware. This article will help distinguish IE AntiVirus from other instances of rogue anti-spyware, describe methods for manual removal, and recommend the use of a professional anti-spyware program like ParetoLogic’s XoftSpySE to completely remove the threat and prevent future installations.

Example IE AntiVirus Fake Alert:

The Background of IE AntiVirus

IE AntiVirus is not a new rogue anti-spyware, but really a reincarnation of older programs. It’s past includes IE Defender, Malware Bell, and Files Secure. Due to its age in the digital world, IE AntiVirus is frequently packaged with more dangerous threats such as viruses and malware, or left installed makes it easier for other malicious programs to infect the host computer. Leaving IE AntiVirus running is like leaving the gate open in a fence, just anyone can stop on by!

Another problem with IE AntiVirus is the perceived legitimacy of the fake error message and system updates it showers upon the desktop. Even if a user learns to just ignore these message, and overcome the annoyance, it is a risk. How will the user know when the computer system legitimately does have a problem? Failure to recognize serious system problems will put all the information contained on the computer is jeopardy of corruption and loss.

Do not be deceived by the highly graphical look of the IE AntiVirus Security Center. This rogue spyware has been around for a very long time, and is simply updated to mimic the look of newer anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. Clicking on any of the areas, such as to “register” the software and learning more information about the “threats found” may install them onto your computer or take you to a website aimed at capturing your personal information.

Manual Removal of IE AntiVirus

In comparison to the manual removal of other rogue spyware, IE AntiVirus is about as tough as they come. Complete removal is a tall task for even experts of the Windows operating system, and should not be attempted by beginners. There are just too many registry files to delete and manipulate; the probability of damage to the operating system is very high. The majority of users should follow the recommended method of using a program for specific anti-spyware removal such as ParetoLogic Anti-Spyware.

If you are intent upon attempting a manual removal, be prepared to “fix” any of your mistakes with a reformat of the hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Make sure your personal documents and files are backed up. If you do need to reinstall the backup files on a freshly wiped hard drive, double check their health with a virus and spyware scan.

First step in a manual removal is to delete the files associated with IE AntiVirus from your computer. Use the Search function to look for the following file names in Windows Explorer and delete them:

ieav.exe
ieav.db2
ieav.db3
unopus.dll
vidk32.dll
IE AntiVirus 3.2.lnk
ksol.dll
zorad.dll
vidas32.dll
iebho.dll
ANTIVIRUS.exe
pnas16.dll
iksaps.dll
apunbeps.dll
apsagy.dll
apsaxu.dll
apsaps.dll
iksagy.dll
konsal.dll
odsaxu.dll
odunbegy.dll

Next, you must stop the processes to prevent continual re-installation of the program. Press CTL-Alt-Delete to access the Task Manager, and click on the tab Processes. Look for ieav.exe and ANTIVIRUS.exe and stop the processes. Don’t worry about the error message warning you receive about the potential harm of ceasing processes. This is a blanket warning message.

Finally, the Windows registry keys must be deleted or modified to remove traces of IE AntiVirus. From the Run command line, type “regedit” to access the Registry Editor. If you do not know how to use the Registry Editor, stop now and use a professional anti-spyware program! This step is very dangerous to the operating system and not for the inexperienced.

The following registry files may need deleting or modification:

Recommended Method of Removal: Professional Anti-Spyware Programs

Using a manual removal method is a huge risk and complete waste of time. ParetoLogic’s XoftSpySE, a professional spyware removal program, can completely remove IE AntiVirus in a few minutes and protect against future installations. Even if the manual removal is completed perfectly, rogue spyware programs are changed so often, it is highly likely a file associated with the spyware software will remain on the computer. In the worst case scenario, the manual removal goes wrong, and the user must reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows– a procedure that can take hours!

Professional anti-spyware programs are not one trick ponies. ParetoLogic XoftSpySE uses a continually updated database to remove and prevent against a myriad of threats. Manual removal procedures are only valid for one specific rogue spyware program. Users relying on only manual removal guides must find one for each instance of spyware that installs itself on the computer.

The expense associated with most anti-spyware programs are minimal. While many users actively use anti-virus software, this alone is not sufficient protection. Viruses and spyware are different in their makeup and behavior on a host’s computer. Anti-virus software may recognize an unauthorized installation of programs and files, but is not designed to remove the spyware completely. Smart users will have both anti-virus protection, and anti-spyware removal tools.

The K660i marks another addition to the sub-10k phones from Sony Ericsson. The competition is so stiff that manufacturers are forced to release at least a phone in this price range every month. The K660i is a feature-packed phone that is all set to provide an all-round package rather than cater to just audio/video or camera aspect of the multimedia. Can it win the hearts of prospective buyers with its bevy of features or should Sony Ericsson concentrate on a single aspect of multimedia? Let’s see.

The Sony Ericsson K660i has a very trendy-looking candy-bar form factor. The phone we received was a lime-on-white option. There are a couple of other color options, all of which look really good. The phone is sleek and fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. The face of the phone features a large 2-inch bright and sharp display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. The navigation keys, including the 5-way D-Pad and the answering keys, are placed on a thick lime-colored band. However, the keys are a bit cramped and you could end up punching two keys at once. The alphanumeric keypad is made up of round buttons which are tiny but tactile. The buttons have numbers printed on them while the alphabets sit just beside it. The entire keypad is well lit, which makes it very readable even in the dark.

The memory card slot is on the left, hidden behind a neat dust cover; the volume control and the camera button are on the right. The fastport retains its previous placement at the end of the phone and the space is shared with a lanyard loop hole. The top of the phone sees the power ON/OFF/profile key.

The rear of the K660i plainly flaunts its 2.0 MP camera. The camera has a self-portrait mirror, which is helpful to those who like to capture their own picture.

User Interface

The Sony Ericsson K660i is a smooth operating phone. It seems that though it is of a lower price segment, it incorporates the processor of a higher price band phone. The menus of the phone are smooth like those seen in the W890i. The K660i has animated themes. Since all of this has been possible after continuous optimization, I wished the previous models also received those much-anticipated firmware updates. The K660i has a new Media Manager which helps you enjoy all your multimedia collections.

An all-rounder phone, the K660i comes loaded with lots of other applications such as TrackID (for music recognition), Picture Blogging, PhotoDj, VideoDj, MusicDj, a new browser, a collection of applications for GPS, and Location Services from Sony Ericsson.
The Location Services has Google Maps as part of its package of applications; it connects to a GPS satellites via a Bluetooth GPS module.

In a sense, the USP of the K660i is its browser. The phone has a Web-browser shortcut and Web-browsing shortcut keys. The right key of the D-Pad is an un-customizable shortcut to the browser of the phone. As for the shortcut keys, there is a row of keys, which all along since the K810i, has seen the camera shortcut LEDs light up when in camera mode; in the K660i, these LEDs light up for the browser. The shortcuts consist of Pen (either to type a URL or a search string — Google as default search engine), Favorites, Home, and Pan Scan. The Pan Scan option comes with the use of the latest version of the NetFront Browser (Sony Ericsson’s mobile phone browser), version 3.4. There is a magnetic mouse as well in the browser which makes it easy to get to links. The browser loads images, zooms, pans, and scrolls very smoothly, giving a very rich browsing experience. The inclusion of HSCSD helps faster data transfer, enabling you to download attachments quickly.

Overall, the K660i is a smooth customer even with its rich feature pack and coming from a sub-10k price bracket.

As earlier mentioned, the K660i uses the new Media Manager released with the Walkman 3.0. Media is sorted as Photos (Camera and Phone), Music, and Video. The music player is like your Walkman 3.0 — sans the SensMe. The quality of music playback is pretty good. You get standard stereo headsets which don’t really do the magic; however, with the HPM-70 headsets, the results are good. The video player lets you watch videos in landscape and also has forward and reverse options. The video playback is at 15 fps, making videos look as if they were framing.

The K660i has an FM Tuner as well. The quality of the reception is pretty decent, with the headphones (acting antenna) doing the job well.

The K660i has a 2.0MP camera. It is a non-autofocus and doesn’t even have LED flash assistance. The image quality of the pictures we took was average. There is no zoom when in the 2MP mode; zoom is available only when shifted to 1MP or VGA. The video recording capability is not up to the mark. Videos are captured at 15 fps and are good only as bits from the past — else not worth cherishing them as collections.

Battery Life

The battery of the K660i is a 950mAh Li-Ion with 9 hours of specified talk time. The battery life of the phone is brilliant. It lasted me 3 days without the need for a charge. The 3 days included around 4-5 hours of talk time and around 2 hours of music. I did lots of surfing through my GPRS-activated SIM and even then phone lasted me for 3 days. Overall, the battery life is pretty good; someone looking to really utilize the phones capabilities will be happy with its performance.

Conclusion

The Sony Ericsson K660i sells for around Rs. 10,000 with a one year warranty. The phone provides quite a package. It will appeal more to those who are oriented to multiple aspects (music, camera, etc.). However, its performance in both cases is just average and it’s the overall feature package that will draw one to opt for the K660i. If you are looking for a camera phone in this price range, the K790i is a great choice. As for music, there is the W580i or the Nokia XpressMusic 5310. But as an all-round feature packed update, the K660i almost doesn’t have competitors.

source : http://www.beingmanan.com

A lot of people have often asked me how to efficiently use the iPods, I for one got my iPod at a whopping 14,900/- INR and using it for playing music only with all default looks seemed a dumb proposition, being the g33k I am it was quite obvious that I will be snooping around for tools to make the best of my iPod.

Part 1 of the guide will tell you:

How to manage Audio & Video.

How to back up your iPod library.

Transfer songs from the iPod to the PC in way that the file names are the same as the song title or artist/album.

How to add you tube videos in a few clicks without having to convert manually.

I own a 30 GB 5G iPod. 5G are the ones that are video enabled and don’t have the search feature and most noticeably Cover Flow. 30 GB is a lot of space even for the hardcore audiophiles, however Apple decided to up the ante and increase the base capacity to 60 GB & add features like Cover Flow.

But that certainly does not mean that our 5G iPods are obsolete or no good rather they have more potential in them as Apple claims. Here is a list of tips, tricks & softwares that will help you.

1. Audio Management:

I am not an Apple fan & this is a fact well known but when it comes to the iPod I would strongly recommend you to use iTunes for managing your iPod library.

By default iTunes has a setting by which it will make a duplicate copy of the songs you add to it’s media library in a predefined folder in it’s settings. This can and should be unchecked as I assume you are smart enough not to use C:\ drive as the location to store your media.

I will advise you to un-sync your iPod, that is, manually manage your songs, iTunes has an option by which it will automatically – add/erase songs from your iPod depending on the contents of the iTunes Music Folder as shown in the above screen shot. Now, this is more a hassle than a boon for most of us. When you plug in your iPod start iTunes and then click on your iPod in the left navigation bar:

Under devices you will see your iPod.

Click on it and then press F2 to rename your iPod. When you click your device the right screen shows you the details about your iPod, the firmware version etc. below you will see the options, I would suggest you to have the same as mine.

The options are self explanatory. For more information on them click here.

Playlists: iTunes has a feature called ‘Smart Playlists’ which automatically makes playlists based on parameters set by you, Apple has a tutorial written to help you make Smart Playlists. Follow this link.

Tag Editing & Album Art: Tag-Editing is a must for iPods. If you have messed up tags you will have a horrible time browsing through the songs on the iPod. I use a combination of methods to ensure that my tags are well maintained. Album Art is cool, it looks amazing on the iPod and even on your PC’s media player.

Winamp 5.53 + mp3Tag + iTunes + Google = Proper Tags & beautiful Album Art.

Winamp’s latest version have an auto-tag feature and it works like a charm, it will search for the tag info based on filename & incomplete tag information. It also has a search for Album Art.

mp3Tag is a great tool for embedding Album Art, which means that even if you change the location of the song, the Album Art is not lost.

iTunes‘ multi file tag editor feature is something that I find really helpful, you can choose the songs together, let’s say a group of songs belonging to the same album or by the same artist and you can edit the artist/album info of all the files together at 1 go. Also if you can get yourself an iTunes account, you can download Album Art for your songs – for free. Pretty cool

Google – well use it to search Album Art which you can’t find.

2. Video Management:

Music Videos & Movies are something that a lot of us add to our iPods despite of the pathetic battery life. iTunes as I said before makes it very easy to manage and add videos to the iPod.

Please note that iPods only recognize .mp4 format of videos, so before you add your videos you will have to convert them, iTunes has an inbuilt media convertor which I am not very fond of and would suggest the same.

There are quite a few tools that allow you to convert videos to .mp4 for free. I would recommend you to use:

Yamb | Features of Yamb

There is another option from Jodix: Free iPod Video Convertor | Download.

Now that you have converted your videos and are ready to transfer them on your iPods, iTunes has a little gift for you.

You can tag your videos as TV Shows; Music Videos; Movies. If you choose Music Videos you can add Artist/Album etc., for TV Shows, you have the options of Episode No. etc.

Remember Smart Playlists? You can make Smart Playlists of Videos too so whenever you add and tag a new music video it will be automatically added to you Music Videos playlist.

3. You Tube Videos:

You Tube, the famous online video site, a lot of people have often asked as to how to download and transfer songs from You Tube to the iPod and have got tedious methods, now let me tell you a single click auto-conversion and transport tool.

Ares Tube: Formerly known as iTube and now Ares Tube, is an application where you simply have to configure it and enter the URL of the You Tube video, it will take care of the rest. Have a look at the following screen shot, you get the idea how easy this software makes downloading and importing videos to the iPod:

You can choose the format of conversion and even choose to automatically open iTunes and import it to the iTunes library. Pretty neat

4. Transfer Songs from iPod to PC:

One of the biggest problems faced while using an iPod is that 1 cannot transfer songs from the iPod to the PC easily, the method used and recommended by many is that go into the system folders of the iPod and then copy songs, that’s stupid when you have something like Share Pod.

This little app is the best thing that happened to my iPod. It is a portable application, which means you put in your iPod and run it on any computer, result, you can give any song to your friend and even take any song from your friend. You can backup your entire collection of songs & videos in a few clicks.

It has a real time search engine like iTunes. a media player, options on how you want to transfer the songs to the PC – whether you want the songs to have only song title as the file name or artist or both and a lot of other options. Trust me guys this is the best application out there for this purpose.

1. Explorer Icon:

When you plugin your iPod and open My Computer, this icon will appear for your iPod. Something like this:

How to get it?

Open Notepad and enter the following:

[autorun]

icon=icon.ico

Now save this file as autorun.inf, note that the extension is *.inf

Once you have made the file, choose any icon you want and rename it to icon (default extension of icon files is *.ico)

Place both these files in the root directory of your iPod.

I always like to add a personal professional touch to things, this is no different, what I have done in my iPod is that both the files ie. autorun.inf & icon are set as system files which means they will not be shown in Explorer unless the ‘Show System Files’ option is unchecked under Folder Options, which generally is not. To do this:

Start -> Run -> cmd -> Enter

Browse to your iPod directory & then type the following:

attrib autorun.inf +s +h

attrib icon.ico +s +h

The above command will set the file with System & Hidden attributes, in order to make the files visible again:

attrib autorun.inf -s -h

attrib icon.ico -s -h

I am attaching a pack of icons that I have in my computer, please note that I have not made these icons and have found them on the Internet.

A screen shot of the icons in the package:

2. Lyrics Integration:

This is a really cool & hip thing to have in your iPod, lyrics of your iPod along with proper id tags and Album Art are the things any music listener craves for. id tags & Album Art has been spoken about in the iPod Power User Guide – Part 1. In that article I advocated the use of iTunes for song management, here is another reason why you should use iTunes – Sound Crank.

Sound Crank is an iTunes plugin to search for Album Art, Lyrics & even ID tags. All you have to do is, install it, start iTunes, play the songs and Sound Crank will show the lyrics and other info in a small windows within iTunes, all you have to do is play the track, it will search it’s database for the missing info and add.

Sometimes you might have to press Sync.

NOTE: It is not accurate, it will sometimes change the track details to what it feels, which means even the tack title. So double check.

Syncing contacts is one of the most useful & handy features of the iPods, you can sync your iPod with your Windows Address Book. Same goes for Photos, here you can choose as to which folders you want to sync and iTunes will add/remove images from the iPod with respect to the contents of the specified folders.

Bored of the white background and wished you could change it? Your wish has been granted by some geniuses and they have for you – The Background Hack. I have edited the background hack resources to have all default images and only change the background with some really slick icons.

Screen shot:

You can change the background to whatever you want. I am attaching a few along with the firmware. The steps to change the background are:

Download iPod Wizard

Connect iPod to computer.

Start iPW.

In Edit Mode drop down at the top choose ‘iPod’.

Press Load iPod Firmware on the side.

Now you should see a bluish image in the window below the ‘pictures’ tab.

In the drop-down go to location 282.

From right choose Load Bitmap.

Browse to the bitmap you want. (Should be 320 x 240 and *.bmp file)

Press ‘Write to iPod’ at the top.

Done.

Here is a screen shot to help you:

5. Themes: (for 5G only)

Like the Background there are several themes for the iPods too, I had some time back made a theme which was a hybrid of the iPod Touch & iPod Classic. You can find the theme, more details & a How To – Here

Here is what the firmware will make your iPod look like:

6. Portable Applications:

This is the killer, your favorite applications, your Chat Client, Browser with bookmarks & plugins, FTP Client and what not, all go along with your iPod, no more feeling sad that you don’t have access to your PC.

I have the following Portable Applications on my iPod:

Foxit Reader – PDF Reader

PDF Builder- PDF Maker

Photoshop 7 -The great Photo Editor

7. Maximizing Portability:

Wall Charger:

iPod is a great PMP but lacks battery power and often it runs out of battery and we are left in lurch when we don’t have a PC around, the Apple Wall-Charger comes at a whopping 3,000/- INR. If you feel that it is too costly (I do) and do not wish to spend that sort of amount on a charger you can get yourself the cheaper yet as effective ones. I bought myself a YES charger for a mere 280/- INR.

Image of the Wall Charger I have:

Ear-Phones:

The biggest problem with the bundled ear-phones is that they are very uncomfortable, I would recommend you to purchase the Creative EP 630, They cost somewhere around 800/- INR and have a really good Bass output besides are very comfortable.

iPod Dock:

An iPod dock is kind of portable speaker system for your iPod, I have purchased the Logic 3 iStation-9. I have written a review on the same – Here

Hope you enjoyed, please do leave a comment or two for my motivation
